Accuracy of Gender Scans

Gender scans are used to determine the sex of a baby during pregnancy, and their accuracy can vary based on the timing of the scan.

The accuracy can depend on baby's position and maternal BMI. If you have a slightly larger BMI we recommend 16 weeks when the accuracy is much improved.

Here at Take A Peek if we are not sure of the sex of baby we may offer three options:

  • get you to go for a walk to get baby to move into a better position

  • if we think you are too early will will rebook you free of charge

  • offer a TV scan if we think this will help

Ensuring your Sonographer is qualified also improves accuracy. You can rest assured that Take A Peek Sonographer's are fully qualified.

Accuracy by Week (national data)

  • 14 Weeks: 97% accurate

  • 15 Weeks: 98% accurate

  • 16 Weeks: 99.9% accurate

100% Accuracy Option

To ensure 100% accuracy in determining the baby's gender, a gender blood test can be conducted any time from 6 weeks of pregnancy.

We have a lot of ladies talk about the nub theory and have paid for their images to be analysed by AI. We have found this theory not to be consistent or accurate before 14 weeks as the nub can move from an upright angle to a downward angle which we have seen often during scanning. Any ultrasound using this method before 14 weeks is just not accurate

What is Nub Theory?

Nub Theory is a method used to predict the gender of a baby based on the angle and position of the genital tubercle (commonly referred to as the "nub") observed during an early ultrasound. This theory is based on the premise that the genital tubercle develops into either a penis or a clitoris, and its orientation can provide clues about the baby's sex.

How Nub Theory Works

1. **Timing of Ultrasound**: Nub Theory is typically applied during the 11th to 14th week of pregnancy, when the genital tubercle is most visible and defined. 2. **Position of the Nub**: - If the nub is angled upwards (greater than 30 degrees), it is often interpreted as a male indicator. - If the nub is angled downwards or is horizontal, it is generally seen as a female indicator. 3. **Limitations**: - Nub Theory is not 100% accurate and should be taken with caution. - Factors such as the quality of the ultrasound image and the skill of the technician can affect the interpretation.

Conclusion

Nub Theory offers an interesting way for expectant parents to speculate about the gender of their baby, but it is important to remember that it is not a definitive method. For accurate gender determination, medical professionals often rely on more advanced imaging techniques or genetic testing later in the pregnancy.
